1986
The new church building was consecrated on January 26, 1986. Bishop John Russell, District Superintendent Homer Kluck and the Revs. Jim Chandler and Vaughn Baker participated in the service. It was a beautiful and moving moment when Bishop Russell told the more than 700 attendees: “We reverently set aside and consecrate these buildings in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

2001
On April 8, 2001, the congregation gathered once again in the Round Rock High School Field House to enjoy a light breakfast and worship as one body. Music Minister Phil Seawell presented his composition for the campaign which included the words: “Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving, I will be a living sanctuary to you.” Like “On This Rock,” this hymn was sung throughout the campaign and once the new sanctuary was completed.

2003
Dedication Sunday was the culminating activity in the long journey to the new church. On November 23, 2003, several of the very special gifts that have made the new sanctuary a special home were dedicated. These gifts include 90 sponsored pews of the 138 available, chairs, altar furniture, the foyer kitchen, and a new altar Bible. Plaques in honor or memory were placed on the specific items. Also during the service, a “time capsule” containing mementos, historical documents, construction photographs, the 1956 Altar Bible from Brown Street Church, and letters written by children was placed in the crypt beneath the chancel area. and was sealed for future generations.

3. St. Richard’s Episcopal Church

St. Richard's Episcopal Church, 10 Best Church in Round Rock-TX-2023

Established on July 4, 1976 by Rev. Malcolm Riker, Saint Richard’s began as a mission in the then-small town of Round Rock, TX. Initially just a small gathering of families, Saint Richard’s grew and was officially granted mission status in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in 1977. With its new status came the first building: a picturesque stone structure hidden behind the forest and across a bridge over Brushy Creek. near downtown Round Rock.

As Saint Richard’s continued to grow, Fr. Riker’s job was done and he resigned to continue his work of planting Episcopal churches in North Austin. The Reverend Sid Gervais became the first rector of Saint Richard’s.

After ten years of ministry, Saint Richard’s applied for and was granted parish status in 1986. After another ten years, the growth of the church coincided with the growth of the surrounding community, creating the need for a new building and more big. The church you see now was completed in 1997 with additional office space, classrooms, gardens and eventually a new parish hall to be built later.

In a parish history book from 1996, when most of the construction work was still to be done, the author commented: “The people of Saint Richard are working to make this an inclusive place, not an exclusive one.” That hope for the future remains the hope we hold now: that Saint Richard’s will always be a welcoming home in the Round Rock community.

7. St John Vianney Catholic Church

St John Vianney Catholic Church, 10 Best Church in Round Rock-TX-2023

In the mid-1980s, the Diocese of Austin recognized that growth in the area north of Austin would require a second parish in Round Rock. In 1987, the diocese purchased a 9-acre tract of land approximately one mile east of I-35, just outside the northern city limits of Round Rock, as a possible new parish site. The land had been a farm. There were several buildings on the property, including a house, a barn and a garage that a caretaker later converted into additional living quarters and an office.

In 1997, Round Rock’s Catholic population grew to the point where it was necessary to open the second parish. In May of that year, Bishop John McCarthy asked Father Samuel Hose, then pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in College Station, to become the founding pastor. He offered the 9 acres on Sunrise Rd as a possible site. As preparations began to open the parish, a house and two acres on Lake Dr., adjacent to the 9-acre tract, became available. With the help of the diocese, the parish purchased that property to serve as the parish rectory.

Currently, there are over 800 registered households in the parish. A very conservative estimate would put the parish’s population at approximately 1,000 households by 2005. With the continued growth of the Round Rock area, the parish will surely continue to grow even more in the coming years. Parishioners reflect a variety of backgrounds, consistent with the demographics of the broader Austin area. Some are from other countries and many are from states, other than Texas, throughout the United States.

8. Round Rock Baptist Church

Round Rock Baptist Church, 10 Best Church in Round Rock-TX-2023

Round Rock Baptist Church was dedicated on a rainy day, November 14, 2004. The storms came early that morning. After having personally knocked on more than 5,000 doors, Pastor Alvarez couldn’t understand why it had to rain that day. Twenty minutes before the service he had welcomed two ladies and three children, to this day he still remembers their names.

As he looked out the main doors of the conference center, he felt a little discouraged. Knowing that he couldn’t control the weather, he simply said in his heart, “Sir, if all we have is five at our service, okay, we’ll try again next week!” He went up to a private room to pray and compose himself. When it was time to begin the service, he came out and was surprised by all the visitors in the hall.

They had to bring more chairs to accommodate everyone. The Lord had brought exactly what he had prayed for: 100 at the opening service! The actual attendance that day was 111 people, with 11 friends who had come for support. After the preaching service, there were 20 who accepted Christ as their personal Savior!! That opening service has served as a catalyst throughout these years for what is to come.
