John Laurent, OMI, was the first pastor, until 1944, when the parish passed to the diocesan clergy of the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

5. Destiny Through Christ
The history of the Destiny Through Christ Church began in Houston, Texas. Pastor Rudy had just moved to town with plans to only stay for about a year. Little did he know that God had a calling on his life and that he was also about to meet his future wife Annemarie. As he likes to say, “I met the two loves of my life in my first two months in Houston, I met Christ, and then I met my wife.”
Soon after, Destiny Through Christ were inspired by God to bring the same good news they received to those who had not yet heard it. Pastor Rudy returned to the Rio Grande Valley with few resources but a heart full of faith and founded the DTC Church. A few months later, motivated to support her future husband in this endeavor of faith, Annemarie joined Pastor Rudy to help establish the church.
Today Destiny Through Christ is a thriving church that continues to fulfill a God-given dream. Our vision has always been to introduce Christ to as many people as we can in the Rio Grande Valley. To continue expanding the vision and serving the community we need more space! We have a plan to build a new church that will help serve as a beacon of hope for the community.
There are many ways to partner with DTC and be part of the vision. You can get involved by serving and being part of the team that makes each dynamic Sunday service and other outreach events happen. You can also join through a one-time or recurring donation. Not only can you be a part of the DTC story, but we would love for DTC to be a part of your story. You were created to do great things!

8. Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle – National Shrine
Bishop Mariano S. Garriaga approved the construction of a new church and the Sanctuary was built five years later, in 1954, dedicated to the Virgin of San Juan. At that time San Juan was part of the Diocese of Corpus Christi. Sixteen years after its construction, a tragic event that occurred on October 23, 1970 destroyed the entire Sanctuary. While 50 priests concelebrated Mass with another 50 people and 100 schoolchildren in attendance in an adjacent cafeteria, the pilot of a small, low-flying plane crashed into the roof of the sanctuary and exploded in flames.
While the total loss was estimated at $1.5 million, many claim it was a miracle that no one was injured or killed in the tragedy. The plane’s pilot, Francis B. Alexander, was the only fatality. Our Lady of San Juan was protecting her children at that time. Additionally, Father Patricio Domínguez, O.M.I., missionary priest, along with the help of Pedro Rodríguez, sacristan, rescued the statue of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, and Ron Anderson, then Diocesan Priest, saved the Blessed Sacrament before the
The altar was engulfed in flames.
After the destruction of the Sanctuary, the Sanctuary dining room temporarily housed the statue of Our Lady of Saint John.
In 1972, Bishop John J. Fitzpatrick separated the administration of the Shrine from the parish. He made plans to build a parish church on the site of the destroyed Shrine and to build a larger church to serve as a Shrine on the grounds north of the old Shrine. The groundbreaking for the new Shrine took place on November 27, 1976. The new Shrine was dedicated on April 19, 1980. Cardinal Medeiros joined Bishop Fitzpatrick at the dedication along with some 50,000 people.
The National Conference of Catholic Bishops designated Our Lady of San Juan del Valle a National Shrine on March 24, 1998, and the following year, on June 12, 1999, Pope John Paul II designated it as a Minor Basilica.
