1. First Baptist Abilene

 First Baptist Abilene

On December 17, 1881, the First Baptist Church of Abilene was founded shortly after the city of Abilene. Today, the church remains as strong and vital to downtown as it was in 1881. As of February 2023, Brandon Hudson began as the church’s 20th pastor. The church has always been community-minded and has helped with the founding of Hardin-Simmons University and Hendrick Medical Center, as well as many other community mission programs.

Currently, the church’s programs include: a fully licensed daycare, GLO (God’s Little Ones) daycare; a counseling center; a family life center; and City Light Community Ministries, which serves as a local mission point for the homeless and needy in the downtown core and the community as a whole.

2. St. Paul Abilene

St. Paul Abilene

St. Paul United Methodist Church, organized in 1909, has a colorful history. St. Paul has gone by three different denominational names: the Methodist Episcopal Church South, the Methodist Church, and its current denomination: the United Methodist Church.

The Church has had its struggles, particularly around building programs. The first location was on the west side of the 500 block of Beech Street. There was only room for the sanctuary; Parking was on the street. Much later, in the early 1950s, a new educational building and new sanctuary were built on the east side of Beech, just across the street from the original location.

St. Paul has been called the mother church of McMurry University. From its earliest stages under the direction of Dr. J.W. Hunt’s leadership until most recently under Dr. Harper, St. Paul has led the way in financial support and trustee membership.
Strong outreach ministries to the city of Abilene and beyond have been evident throughout St. Paul’s history. Sears Methodist Centers, Hope Haven, Abilene City Mission Board, The Locust Center, Presbyterian Medical Center, Meals on Wheels, West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Habitat and others are some of the institutions the church helps support.

Sunday school classes, since the beginning of St. Paul’s, have played an important role in the stability of the church. There are classes and activities for all ages. Learning eternal truths guides young and old and helps them make right decisions. Strong leaders in all professions have emerged from its members since St. Paul. The church called Saint Paul attracts people for worship, study and fellowship, and then sends them out to make a better world.

3. Highland Church of Christ

Highland Church of Christ

On December 29, 1929, the small group of about 50 remaining members of the Church of Christ purchased land at the corner of South 5th and Highland to construct a new building. When the first part of the building, the basement, was completed in 1930, members began meeting there. “We just dug a hole in the ground and started going to church there,” recalled Frank Sheppard, first minister of Highland Church of Christ.

Construction of the rest of the church took much longer than anticipated due to the Great Depression, but was completed in 1938. Highland Church of Christ grew rapidly and by 1956 another major construction project was underway. The new auditorium was built with a capacity for 1,500 people. Highland uses the same auditorium to this day, after a much-needed remodel in 2014 updated the existing structure.

For nearly 100 years, Highland Church of Christ has actively ministered in Abilene, Texas and in many places around the world. Over the years, Highland has had more than 75 active ministries serving church members of all ages and the Abilene community. Local ministries include Christian Ministries of Abilene (food pantry), Freedom Fellowship & Grace Fellowship (satellite outreach campuses), Boys & Girls Club, a Boy Scout troop, the Highland Counseling Center and many more.

5. Beltway Park Church North Campus

Beltway Park Church North Campus

Beltway Park Church has continued to grow steadily since 1997. At the same time, by the grace of God, the church’s original debt was paid off. Since 1997, we can safely and truly say that our God has simply been drawing us to Himself in many and diverse ways. Yes, buildings have been built and ministries have been added and numbers have increased, but above all, God has shown Himself to us.

He has freed people from the bondage of sin so that they may behold the goodness of it. He has rescued people from the trap of self so that they can submit to his grace. He has healed the broken. He has healed the sick. He has challenged the mature. He has blessed and made us happy in him.

It is our prayer that He will simply continue.

There are other lessons we have learned throughout our history. Here are some of them:

  • Worship God.
  • Focus on God; not money.
  • Fight for unity at all costs.
  • Obey God’s commands in the Bible.
    • Trust God’s promise to reap what you sow, especially in missions.

9. Hillcrest Church of Christ

Hillcrest Church of Christ

The Hillcrest congregation met at Graham Street Church of Christ until the Hillcrest building was built in 1959. The Graham Street building is now the home of Christ Church. Members of Graham Street Church of Christ met on May 29, 1957 to appoint a committee to plan a new congregation. R. S. Powell, Forbes McInroe, Harold Lobley, Bill Hilton and Ray McGlothlin were appointed as trustees to handle the legal affairs.

The next task was to raise $154,000 through the sale of bonds for the construction of a building on a previously selected property in the Hillcrest addition in Abilene. Forbes McInroe, an elder of the Graham Street congregation, served as the building’s contractor.

As construction progressed, those who had indicated their desire to worship with the new congregation held a business meeting to map out initial work and goals for members. At the first meeting, March 15, 1959, Overton Faubus and R. S. Powell were selected as elders. Carl Spain and Overton Faubus were elected ministers. Bill Hilton was asked to serve as Bible school director and Ray McGlothlin as song director.

The church met for the first time on April 12, 1959, with 258 present for Bible classes that morning.

10. Broadview Baptist Church

Broadview Baptist Church

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Lord led Broadview local missions toward apartment and mobile home park outreach ministry. God slowly began to lead us to plant a church on the west side of Abilene, north of the Air Force base: a “multi-site” church – two locations.

With much prayer and the Lord’s blessings we opened Broadview West on Easter Sunday 2006. From the beginning, the goal was to glorify our Heavenly Father and be a tool that God could use to reach the lost and hurting in our community. From the beginning we have done it; knocking on doors, flyers, block parties and getting to know and love people.

Our goals remain the same after almost 10 years. We still intend to share Jesus Christ with the community and with Broadview West, being a light to the community that God loves and cares for them, no matter who it is.
